Every year on 12th May, the world marks International Nurses Day. It falls on Florence Nightingale's birthday, and it's a chance to step back and recognise the people who hold so much of healthcare together.
This year's theme, chosen by the International Council of Nurses, is: Our nurses. Our future. Empowered nurses save lives.
We think it's the right message at the right time.
What empowerment actually looks like
Empowerment is one of those words that can start to sound hollow if it's repeated often enough without anything behind it. So it's worth being specific about what it actually means for nurses day to day.
It means having some say in your working hours, so your job doesn't consume everything else. It means being paid properly. It means mental health being taken seriously — not just a poster in the corridor, but real support when things get heavy. It means access to training and development, and feeling listened to by the people around you.
None of these are extras. They're the basics that make it possible to do this job well over the long term, and when they're in place, everyone benefits. Patient outcomes improve, teams are more stable, and nurses are more likely to stay in a profession that genuinely needs them.
What we see at JustNurses
We've been placing nurses since 2014. The thing we hear most consistently is that nurses want more control — over their schedule, where they work, and their own career path.
For a lot of nurses, working through an agency gives them that. More flexibility, a chance to work across different settings, and the ability to find a pace that works for their life. It's not right for everyone, and we'd never pretend otherwise. But it's something we're proud to support.
We're also aware that our job is about more than filling shifts. It's about making sure the nurses we work with feel looked after too, not just placed and forgotten about. That means answering the phone, sorting things quickly, and being straight with people.
A thank you
To every nurse reading this: we know what you do isn't easy. We know there are shifts that are too long and days where you wonder how you'll do it again tomorrow.
We're grateful for every single one of those days you come back.
Happy International Nurses Day from all of us at JustNurses.
If you're thinking about what's next in your nursing career, give the team a call. We'd love to hear from you.
