Nursing remains the most trusted profession in Britain, according to a new opinion poll carried out by Ipsos MORI.
According to its Veracity Index for 2018, 96 per cent of people would trust a nurse to tell the truth, up from 94 per cent in 2017.
This puts nurses ahead of doctors, where the trust rate is 92 per cent. The most trusted non-health professionals were teachers at 89 per cent and engineers at 87 per cent.
Since being added to the list in the 2016 poll, nurses have consistently finished in first place, leaving the likes of professors, scientists, judges and police trailing. The poll has been running since 1983.
Acting chief executive and general secretary of the Royal College of Nursing Dame Donna Kinnair said: "This is a proud and well-deserved achievement for our profession. It is a testament to the hard work and care nursing staff provide to patients."
However, she added: “Public appreciation will not fix staff shortages nor reverse falling student nursing numbers.
“As nursing vacancies in England increase and are expected to hit 48,000 in the next five years, the government must do more to show nurses they are valued.”
The widespread trust of nurses is high irrespective of political allegiances, with 98 per cent of Conservative votes and 96 per cent of Labor voters trusting nurses. When Brexit views are considered, 97 per cent of those who voted Remain and 96 per cent of Leavers trust nurses.
While political allegiance makes little difference to trust and nursing sector leaders call for more support from the government, politicians themselves were among the least trusted. Only 22 per cent trusted government ministers and just 19 per cent trusted politicians in general. Only advertising executives (16 per cent) fared worse.
Other professions near the bottom of the poll included journalists and estate agents, while the biggest fall in trust was a five per cent drop for TV newsreaders to 62 per cent.
